Ever wondered what it takes to get a nutritious, delicious school lunch onto a student’s plate? At the School Lunch Collective, every meal represents more than just food — it’s the outcome of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and care, all focused on supporting the learning and well-being of our ākonga (students).
Where It All Begins: Listening to Our Communities
The journey starts with feedback — from students, teachers, and school communities. What do ākonga enjoy? What are their favourite flavours, and what’s not working? Our Culinary Team uses this input to craft meal concepts that reflect the tastes and preferences of the students we serve. These ideas are then developed into full recipes that are not only tasty but designed for real school kitchens.
Nutrition Matters: Balanced, Inclusive Meals
Once a meal is drafted, it’s handed over to our Dietetic Team, who ensure that every lunch meets Ministry of Education nutrition guidelines. We aim to create meals that are nourishing, balanced, and cater to a wide range of dietary needs — because every child deserves a lunch that helps them thrive.
Sourcing the Best: Ingredients with Purpose
Next, our Supply Chain Team, in collaboration with Gilmours, gets to work sourcing the freshest, most appropriate ingredients. We prioritise quality, reliability, and sustainability, making sure each element of the meal supports our wider goal: kai that fuels learning.
From Test Kitchen to Tray: Real-World Cooking
Before meals are served at scale, they go through a final round of development in our Production Team’s test kitchens. Here, the focus is on food safety, preparation at volume, and—of course—flavour. We test for consistency, portioning, and ease of service, ensuring every meal works in a real school setting.

Behind every plate served by the School Lunch Collective is a passionate, purpose-driven team working together to support the tamariki of Aotearoa. It’s more than a lunch — it’s an investment in the future.
Because kai is more than food. It’s connection, culture, energy, and care.
